Do I need Mind Skills?

Sports Mind Skills

Athletes spend countless hours working on technique, skills and physical condition. At an elite level athletes spend vast amounts of money on equipment and travel but what investment is made to develop mental skills to generate peak performance in training and competition?

Our site is about performance psychology and it's not just for athletes. People who achieve at a high level recognise the importance of training the way they think, feel and interact with others. The mind is a "muscle" that needs training like the rest of the body and for many years psychologists have played a crucial role in supporting sports people and others wanting to reach their goals. The tougher the competition or the higher the goal the more important mind skills become. That's why we're creating sets of quality sport psychology products you can use in your own time

Dr Jack J. Lesyk from The Ohio Centre for Sports Psychology www.sportpsych.org works with serious athletes of all ages and ability levels and has identified 9 mental skills that contribute to success in sports. Sports Mind Skills acknowledges the great work of Dr Jack J. Lesyk and through our own research and sporting experiences Sports Mind Skills has added two more categories of Mind Skills to the model; Decision Making (10) & Mental Toughness for sport(11).

The pyramid below, adapted from Lesyk’s model, represents the relationship of the eleven mind skills to one another. Each of the higher levels incorporates and is based upon the skills of the preceding levels. However, you don’t have to learn them in order, just work on the skills you need to improve the most. You could be using any combination of these skills on any one day.

Basic Mind Skills, Level I - These sport psychology skills constitute a broad base for attaining long-term goals, learning, and sustaining daily practice. They are needed on a day-by-day basis for long periods of time, often months and years.

Preparatory Mind Skills, Level II - These mind skills are used in the lead up preparation and immediately before performance. They maybe used before competition begins, or immediately before a specific performance action, such as a golf shot or a free throw in basketball.

Performance Mind Skills, Level III - These skills are used during actual performance behaviour.

Sports Mind Skills is working hard to develop a range of sport psychology products designed to help athletes and coaches in their search for peak performances.

The products in the For Everyone category are designed to help teenagers and adults develop mind skills not just for sport but for the challenges faced daily like an important job interview or exam, presentations and performances, major events and personal challenges.
