Drew crew of the year - Nov '07

Rowing Mind SkillsAustralian's Duncan Free and Drew Ginn (the voice of Rowing Mind Skills) have been acclaimed as world rowing's male crew of the year. The international rowing federation (FISA) award was announced in Budapest with Free and Ginn recognised after successfully defending the coxless pairs title at the world championships in Munich in September. It's second time around for Ginn, who previously won the award with James Tomkins in 2003, when they also triumphed in the coxless pairs at the world titles.

Sleeping Better for Sport - Oct '07

Sleeping better for sportThis is a big month of new releases at Sports Mind Skills and today we welcome the duo of MP3s by Justine Tonner-Joyce under the Sleeping Better for Sport banner.

Recovery for athletes is a vital part of training and most recovery occurs during sleep. The first track, Information About Sleeping Better (6:27), can be listened to anytime and contains tips and techniques to help athletes set the conditions that promote better sleep.

Getting Ready for Sleep (15:28) is a relaxation MP3 carefully crafted to promote the onset of sleep. It will help athletes fall asleep more quickly, sleep better through the night and wake well rested. You can listen to it in bed or just before going to bed to put your mind and body at rest. Injury Recovery Pack - Oct '07

Injury Recovery Pack logoSports Mind Skills are proud to announce the launch of the Injury Recovery Pack, a revolutionary set of three mental training tracks that can help athletes heal faster, maintain mental freshness during injury and return to sport with more confidence. Available exclusively as a MP3 download from www.sportsmindskills.com the Injury Recovery Pack consists:

1. Healing Faster (20:18 min) focuses on the repair of the part of the body that has been hurt. The guided visualization starts with relaxation and then leads you through energising, strengthening and rejuvenating images to bring new life to the damaged area. Soon after you have a diagnosis of your injury you can listen to it daily to speed recovery. You can also use Healing Imagery while undergoing physiotherapy activities, such as icing, or when you are just lying in bed at night.

Healing Faster on an iPod Nano2. Motivation and Goal-Setting (4:58 min) would be listened to when you are a little further recovered and are beginning to do rehabilitation exercises. Setting goals for yourself will provide motivation at a time when recovery seems slow and frustrating. It’s now when you’ll start to review how far you’ve come and begin to find ways to re-start your involvement in your sport.

3. Returning to Sport (13:00 min) with full confidence is the ultimate aim and subject of the third track in this series. In this track you’ll imagine doing rehabilitation exercises to help you control your technique so as to prevent future injury. You’ll rehearse specific skills from your sport and visualize yourself playing freely and strongly. This track will also help you leave the injury behind – just like an old toy you no longer want to play with. By this time you’ll stop thinking and telling people about how the injury occurred and start telling the story of how well you’ve recovered and how excited you are to start playing again.

Will it work? Scientific studies suggest that the mental training techniques in the Injury Recovery Pack can help you get better faster. For example, one sports psychology study has shown that recovery from injury can be accelerated when athletes engage fully in goal setting, positive self-talk, and the use of healing imagery (Ievleva & Orlick 1991).

Another study found that knee strength was greater and re-injury anxiety and pain were less at 24 weeks after surgery for a group that did relaxation and guided imagery sessions than for placebo and control groups (Cupal & Brewer 2001).

Facing Challenges - Sep '07
